About 275 students at Hillcrest Christian School in Thousand Oaks spent much of Thursday trying to make life more comfortable for youngsters entering the foster-care system.

After buying clothing, toiletries and basic school supplies at local stores, the students — kindergartners through high school seniors — assembled them into gender-specific, age-specific emergency kits that can be given to children and teens moving into foster care.

The project was a partnership with James Storehouse, a Newbury Park nonprofit serving public and private child welfare agencies. The organization fulfills emergency requests to expedite safe placement of babies and children and to help older youths as they transition out of the system.
